| Notes for Charles (Spouse 1) |
Charles Pitfield was a Dancing Master living in the hamlet of Cantsfield in the parish of Tunstall. Tunstall is in the far north of the county of Lancashire away from areas where the Peatfield/ Patfield families were living. When Charles married Ann Robinson in 1767 his name was spelt at Pitfield in the register. This is the earliest Pitfield spelling that I have found in Lancashire. The Allegation and Bond for this marriage has survived and is signed twice by Charles - once he signs as Pitfield and the second time as Patfield.
Another reference to him is in 1775 when he is a prisoner in Lancaster Gaol as a debtor - here the name is given as Patefield.
His burial entry reads Charles Patefield of Cantsfield, Dancing Master. |
